Ethiopian Culture The people of Ethiopia are very diverse group of people that speak several different languages. Among them are a form of Semitic, Cushitic, or Amharic–which is the official language. English is the most widely spoken foreign language. This may cause issues when people of different cultures work together. Reports show that there is a long history of tension between tribal groups in the region. Other issues that will factor in while doing business in Ethiopia are: extreme poverty; poor infrastructure, such as transportation; communications and other utility services; restrictions on foreign exchange and poor banking system. Despite this, Ethiopia’s economic growth has surged, averaging 6-7% from 1993-1998 (Ethiopia Economic Studies, 2000). Overall, Ethiopia is a country ripe with opportunity that can provide a mutual benefit to investors and the local population. If they feel they cannot be understood and/or are unable to, or find it difficult to understand others, they may become less enthusiastic about speaking aloud or attempting to try and communicate with others, which may mean they will have few or no friends. Children who have these difficulties may become disruptive in an education setting, to make up for their potential inability to concentrate and self-esteem. 2. 1 Explain ways in which adults can effectively support and extend the speech, language and communication skills during the early years: Adults can help children greatly with the above skills, using many simple yet very effective tools. For instance, a supportive environment, where communication is encouraged and praised, can increase the confidence of a child wishing to convey their thoughts. Reading to children from birth is a recommended aid to speech development and the ability to form words. Reading also stimulates the creative mind, and imagination, which should be encouraged in children so that they can use their own creativity with confidence as they develop. When encouraging language skills, we should be aware of the age and communication ability of the child or children we are with. When speaking we can use more simplified words so as the child can understand us, and what we are trying to say, more easily. Hand gestures and exaggerated facial expressions are also very useful in the early years, as young children respond very well to animation and playful tones. Repetitive communication is also a very useful tool to use to help children master words and language. Sing-along songs are a great way for children to learn word-formation, and rhyme. It also encourages them to be confident in their vocal ability, as they sing-along with their play-mates and adults alike. 2. 2 Explain positive effects of adult support for children and carers: As children are growing and learning and finding how things work, there can be a lot of frustration and tantrums. Having an adult support, able to explain patiently and calmly how to overcome the current frustration and complete said task effectively can have a positive outcome for future problem-solving. Children respond very positively to praise and encouragement, so having an adult who is aware of this benefit, will have a lasting and positive effect on a child. 2. 3 Explain how levels of speech and language development vary between children entering early years provision and need to be taken into account during settling in and planning. All children learn at different rates and develop their language and communicating skills at individual levels, it is important that those working in a care setting are aware of this and treat each child accordingly. If there are specific learning needs, where speech and communication are concerned, in order for the child to integrate more easily and comfortably, a speech therapist may be used to help improve their settling in. Once the child is more comfortable with speaking and his ability to use language, he can then interact with others more confidently and then begin to learn from them in his own time.

Julius Caesar Julius Caesar In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Decius Brutus and Mark Antony, both Roman Senators, eulogize Julius Caesar, each using a different technique and approach. Brutus, in a somewhat arrogant, to the point, eulogy, attempts to sway the people. He justifies conspiring against Caesar by stating that Caesar's ambition would have hurt Rome. However, in Antony's eulogy, he focuses on Caesar's positive traits, and cunningly disproves Brutus' justification for killing Caesar. The fickle Romans waver between leaders, responding emotionally, rather than intellectually, to the orators. Brutus seeks to explain why he conspired against Caesar. He begins his speech with "Romans, countrymen ...", appealing to their consciousness as citizens of Rome, who, he later says, will benefit as freeman with Caesar's death. This shows that Brutus knows how to lure the crowd, appealing to their better judgement as Romans. He declares that he is an honorable man, and tells them that he will let them judge the validity of his claims. That is, he will allow the truth to speak for itself. This encourages the crowd to believe him, as an honorable man. He says that he wants them to know the facts; "Censure me in your wisdom, and awake your senses that you may the better judge." Sharing information with the people is flattering and it almost guarantees acceptance. He gets their sympathy by saying that he loved Caesar, daring the people to find anyone who loved Caesar more. Brutus declares that he never wronged Caesar, that he cried for Caesar's love, was happy for his greatness, honored him for his courage, but had to kill him because of Caesar's ambition. He says that the reason for killing Caesar was his great love for Rome. He justifies his actions by saying that he loved Caesar but, "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more." He then asks rhetorically if the people would want to live their lives as slaves under Caesar's rule or would they prefer to live as freemen with Caesar dead. To anyone insulted by his speech he wonders if, as Romans who love their freedom, they could be offended or reject what he, Brutus, says. He poses the question, "Who is here so base that would be a bondman?" He stresses the point, repeating the line, "If any, speak, for him have I offended." "I pause for a reply.", allows them to respond to his rhetorical questions, giving them an even greater sense that he cares about them and their opinions. They can only respond, " None, Brutus, none." That is, none are offended, they do not disagree or argue with his words or his actions. Mark Antony's eulogy utilizes a different approach. He starts out by addressing the crowd as "Friends" because he wants to come to them as a friend rather than a ruler trying to gain power. He then says, "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.", thus he can ease in praises of Caesar without the crowd stopping him. He sounds very sincere when he says, "The noble Brutus hath told you Caesar was ambitious.... For Brutus is an honorable man." He repeats that statement three more times becoming increasingly sarcastic, saying finally, "Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and sure he was an honorable man." Since the people responded positively to Brutus' speech, Antony could not insult Brutus' honesty in a direct manner. Yet, Antony disproves Caesar's ambition with three examples. One is when he gave the ransom of captives to the public treasury and not his own, another when he cried with the poor people, and finally when he refused the kingship that Antony offered him, three times. Anyone who was ambitious would never have done any such things. Antony says, "I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke." , but that is exactly what he does. Antony is using a dramatic effect on the people, first by entering on the stage with the body of Caesar, and at the end stating that his heart is still with the body of Caesar, ending his speech weeping. In justifying Caesar and disproving Brutus, the people see Antony as a potential successor to Caesar. They are swayed to him by his dramatics, his underhanded way of making a point, his repetition, and compelling proof of Caesar's concern. He is able to get the people to question the rightness of killing Caesar. He has planted doubt in the people's minds, in all areas except that he, Antony, is, "poor soul", an honorable. Dealing With Homesickness at Boarding School Any parent who has seen their child go off to boarding school, or even college, has likely experienced that dreaded phone call home. I miss you. I want to come home. Homesickness is a natural, albeit challenging, reaction to being away from home for the first time. Unfortunately, there are no quick cures for homesickness, a feeling all of us encounter at some point or another. If your child is going off to boarding school, homesickness is bound to be something he or she has to deal with too. Going off to boarding school is what the professionals call a planned separation. Reassure your child by explaining that those feelings of missing familiar surroundings and family are perfectly normal. Tell them about the times when you felt homesick and how you dealt with it. Need more advice? Check out these four tips. Dont Allow Your Child to Call You Constantly This is a tough thing for a parent to do. But you have to firmly lay down the ground rules for calling you. You also need to resist the temptation to call and check in on your child every hour. Establish a regular time for a 15-minute chat and stick to it. The school will have rules about when and where students can use cell phones. Encourage Your Child to Make New Friends Your childs advisor and dorm master will help them meet older students who will take them under their wings, helping them to quickly make lots of new friends; if you give him or her some room to do so. Dont Be a Helicopter Parent Of course, you are there for your child, but he or she needs to learn quickly that it is necessary to adjust and cope. Thats what life is about. Your child has to make decisions and abide by the consequences of those decisions. He or she has to make choices independently and not rely on you, the parent, to provide guidance constantly. Your child will never develop good judgment if you make all the choices and decide everything for him or her. Resist the temptation to be an over-protective parent. The school will act as a parent and protect your child while in their care. That is their contractual responsibility. Understand That It Takes Time to Adjust Your child has to learn new daily routines and allow his or her biorhythms to adapt to the new, somewhat inflexible schedule of boarding school. Habits often take a month to develop and become second nature, so be patient and remind your child to stick with whatever challenges are arising. It will get better. Homesickness is typically a temporary phenomenon. It passes within a few days. If, however, it does not pass and your child is extremely unhappy to the point of despair, dont ignore it. Speak with the school and find out what they feel can be done.   Incidentally, this is one more reason why it is so important for you and your child to get the fit right. If a student is happy in his or her new surroundings, the feelings of homesickness will pass very quickly.

He cared for her and watched over her even when he did not have control over her. Adam may not have been loyal to Evelyn, but he loved her and took care of her. He knew the real Tashi that many people never saw. He was loyal to Tashi, but after the circumcision he would barely ever see her. He was more of a great friend than a good husband was. He lets her know that he loves her several times in the book. At their marriage he cuts the same lines in his face as Tashi had to represent the Olinkans. He goes with her to Mzee's house in Switzerland while she is cured. He also dreams about her and her livelihood, like when she used to say, "But what is it?" when she was happy. Adam, Olivia's brother, was daring at heart. He and Tashi used to go the fields to have sex that was considered very taboo. His mentors were Lisette and Pierre. He learned from them. He was in love with Lisette. Sh e was the contrast to Tashi. She was the opposite of her. Adam probably would have rather lived in France with her, but he stood by Tashi to give her love and affection. Adam was not a bad guy at all. He helped Tashi through the years and was always there whenever she needed somebody. It was unfair of him to be cheating on Tashi with Lisette, and Tashi resented him for that. He was always honest with Tashi though. Adam, like many of the other men in this book, was not a terrible person. He was good at heart.

There are various models that can be used to assess team performance.The assessment of team performance is becoming more and more standard with the emergence of team environments. The three models that I have decided to research to evaluate team performance are the absolute judgment method, the behavioral appraisal method, and the management by objectives (MBO) method. These are all valuable assessment methods that are used by many different types of organizations. It is important to remember that no single assessment method is 100% perfect, so be sure to take into consideration which works best for the company.The absolute judgment method is an assessment of performance that is based only off the performance standards that are set. It does not compare one employee to the next, therefore there could be multiple employees with the same ratings. In the textbook Managing Human Re sources it states, â€Å"the dimensions of performance deemed relevant for the job are listed on the rating form, and the manager is asked to rate the employee on each dimension. †1 This method allows for a manager from a different area to assess the performance of the team, since there are set standards set.We can use the example that each of our sales  teams has a performance standard of making 15 sales per week. If the team has averaged 18 sales per week over the last six months then any manager could see that their performance is above performance standards. The idea that there are preset performance standards that are known makes it easy for the manager to rate the team’s performance. The benefits of this system is that it doesn’t put employees against each other during the evaluation and that there is documentation that supports the assessment of the employee. In the event of legal issues, this method makes it easier for the company to prove why the asse ssment is rated the way it is.The negative side of this method could be variances in evaluation standards of different managers and also there could be issues judging individual performance when assessing the team. It is important to make sure that assessments reflect not only the team, but also the individuals on each team. The behavioral appraisal method is another method that could be used to assess team performance. This method looks at the behaviors that are performed by the team and its individuals. A manager may focus on things like whether the team is back from lunch on time, whether the team is prepared for meetings, or whether the team shows up for work daily.The focus is laid on behaviors that the company deems important to improve performance. The most commonly known example of this method is the Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS). Robert Bacal describes its differences by stating, â€Å"it focuses on behaviors that are determined to be important for completing a job task or doing the job properly, rather than looking at more general employee characteristics. †2 This method is used to appraise whether a person is doing what is expected of their job. For example, a salesperson may be evaluated on whether or not they successfully ring up every piece of merchandise on every transaction.This is a very valuable step for a salesperson’s job description. This step is extremely important to make sure the company is not losing money. The behavior’s that are being evaluated in this type of appraisal are more specific to the job at hand. The benefits of this type of appraisal is that it makes it easier on the company to spot areas that need improvement and to provide possible solutions, it promotes the behaviors that are necessary for the employee to be successful and productive, and it provides documentation that supports the legal aspect of backing up the evaluation.The job description and role  of the employee has to be resear ched to make sure this type of assessment is appropriate. Management by objectives (MBO) is another strategy that can be used to evaluate performance. MBO is a strategy that relies on setting goals or objectives that the employee is expected to reach. This strategy can be a little time consuming if the job description relies on a steady change of objectives. In order for MBO to be an effective strategy for appraisal, then the manager would have to meet with the employees either daily, weekly, monthly, or possibly quarterly to go over the objectives.It is important for the manager to make sure that all objectives are given to the employees and they are understood. A major benefit for this type of assessment is that the evaluation of specific goals does a fantastic job of cutting out the chance for biased evaluations. It is also a benefit that the objectives can be changed for each job description rather quickly. An issue with this type of assessment is that employees tend to focus ma inly on the objectives and goals that are set by managers, which in turn could lead to other areas falling. Paul Kevin Michaelree states, â€Å"the MBO process focuses attention not on the person but on the job.†3 This shows that the MBO is focused on reaching objectives and does not leave room for a biased evaluation. This assessment focuses more of setting goals for specific jobs and not for specific people. A manager should set objectives or goals for all production workers to be the same. This would mean that each person under the job title production worker would have the same goals or objectives. This would leave solid documentation for future possible legal matters. Behavioral Appraisal Instruments Management by Objectives (MBO) *Research and discuss 2-3 models of team performance. Recommend a strategy for the company to adopt to assess team performance. *Which one should the company use? Why? I believe the best appraisal method for our organization would be MBO. I believe that our company would benefit the most by aligning the objectives of the company to the objectives of the employee. Our managers have a great deal of knowledge in the company’s goals and objectives. They can look at the jobs that are done in their departments and make sure that the goals and objectives for their employees are steps in the direction of the company’s.The MBO strategy will give the company goal seeking employees. We will see a change of direction in the way things are done by the employees. There are beliefs that we could lose employee performance in other, non-objective areas. The answer to this is to make sure that the company’s ethics policy is followed at all times. The new performance assessment strategy may have the employees thinking heavily about quantity, but the managers must continue to stress the importance of quality as w ell. This method of assessing the employees will also take away the error and bias that come along with other methods.The assessment of a team will no longer have room for the manager to use bias when evaluating, since all teams doing the same job will have the same objectives. There may be individuals, like team leaders, within the teams that may have added personal objectives. The idea of the managers spending more time with the employees is also a benefit for the company. Each manager will have to spend more time with individual employees as well as the teams. Managers will have to meet with the teams weekly, monthly, or quarterly to ensure the objectives are understood.This makes it easy for the managers to make sure changes in objectives are relayed quickly. â€Å"TFC was a successful cable TV network- and the only network dedicated solely to fashion (Stahl,2007)†. It was one of the most widely available niche networks with an 80 million subscriber base (Stahl,2007). It has had a constant growth above the industry average until the emergence of new competitors such as CNN and Lifetime in 2006. One of the most important strengths of TFC is the fact that the channel is in the basic cable package. As opposed to CNN or Lifetime, TFC is not a pay channel and thus has a higher possibility to reach more viewers than its competitors.However, TFC is currently facing two major problems. These are an unclear targeting group and an increased power of competitors. These problems could be also seen as their weakness. Since their target group is unclear, unclear strategies might be formulated that could hinder the growth of the channel. Based on the customer and market data from the case, the largest current customer base of TFC are females betw een the age of 35 and 54 (representing 27. 45% of the viewers). While their ideal targeting groups is slightly younger females from the age of 18 to 34, they only make up for 20.13% of the viewers.Generally, this group likes to follow the way celebrities dress. Information about discounts in fashion stores and fashion recommendations are valued as well by this age range. However, it should be noted that their income might be lower compared to other age ranges. On the other hand, male viewers could also represent an interesting customer base for the channel. Males nevertheless, focus more on new designs, fashion trends and new brands. Different to young females, males can be less sensitive to price.Unfortunately, TFC has the lowest market share with only  1. 1M households (representing 1% of the market share). Besides, the biggest customer bases for Fashion Today are females ranging from 18 to 34 years old representing 27. 09% of their viewers. They represent a big threat for TFC a s the later might profit by targeting this age range in the future. On the other hand, Fashion Tonight from CNN especially targets male customers. Therefore not surprising, males represent 45% of their viewer’s base. Both Fashion Today and Fashion Tonight also have a larger customer base than TFC, which are 3. 3M and 4. 4M respectively.In order to change the current situation, Wheeler came up with three scenarios. The first one is maintain a multisegment of Fashionistas, Planners & Shoppers and Situationists. The advantage of this scenario is the increase in net income partially because no incremental costs would be incurred. At the same time, TCL could also target the 18-34 age group. However, the CPM will be $0. 2 lower than 2007. Also, in this scenario, no clear targeting group would yet arise. The second scenario is targeting the segment of Fashionistas.The narrower segmentation will put the company in a disadvantage situation with a 0.8% decrease of its market share (0. 88M). It also requires an incremental cost of $15 million. Finally, the risk exists that a large part of the current viewers wants might not be met by this differentiation as programs might be seen as to â€Å"professional† or â€Å"distinct†. However, buying power in this group is high and CPM will go up to $3. 5 resulting in the increase of both ad revenue ($322,882,560) and net income ($151,496,083). The third scenario entails focusing on two segments, Fashionistas and Shoppers & Planners. The average rating could increase to 1. 2% with a broader viewers pool (1.32M) and extract highest ad revenue and net income with $345,945,600 and $168,867,232 respectively.Meanwhile, younger aged females should especially be targeted if this segmentation is put into place. Nevertheless, a $20 million investment is required for this scenario and only targets around 50% of the females. There is a possibility to lose customer loyalty in this case and consequently part of its custome r base. It is predicted that with a lower price, more advertisers are willing to launch their ad on the fashion channel. During my Master’s degree I took courses in CMOS analog, digital, RF and mixed signal design. Other complementary courses taken for the completion of the degree were in the areas of microwave engineering, DSP and communication systems. The areas of research that I am interested in are classified into one of the following categories.
